The procedure was a bit uncomfortable but not painful, for which I am very grateful, but now I am extremely sleepy and I don't know if there's a relationship. </div><div><br /></div><div>I had to have my ocular pressure taken an hour after the procedure, so I walked across the street to the big Factoria shopping center and wandered around Petco for a bit talking to animals. The rest of my day was relatively uneventful, involving laundry, reorganizing some jewelry, and walking to the lake since yet again we had spectacular weather (and both eagles in the tree right above our porch). Now it's <i>Resident Alien</i> time. We brought lunch to eat there and saw many animals, including penguins, wolves, brown bears, kangaroos, giraffes, two species of otter, dozens of families of birds, and a variety of great cats including lions, jaguars, and leopards. It was as busy as we've seen the zoo but didn't feel crowded even around the playful gorillas. <div><div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53594629851/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-03-17 12.30.47"><img alt="2024-03-17 12.30.47" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53594629851_561a69c0cc.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

</div></div><div><br /></div><div>We stopped at Safeway for weekly supplies on the way home, then we ate Guinness beef stew (well, Impossible beef stew) and Irish cheddar for dinner while watching the NCAA tournament announcement show -- the Maryland women will play Iowa State, the Maryland men didn't even get an invitation to the NIT. Then we watched a bunch of <i>Resident Alien</i> until it was time for this week's <i>The Way Home</i>, where I wish there was more Jacob and less Young Kat and Elliot, as usual.</div></div><div><br /></div>littlereviewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12768069499769338285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762173.post-27482420458708341672024-03-17T03:08:00.002-04:002024-03-17T03:16:07.629-04:00Greetings from Edmonds Saturday was a gorgeous nearly-70 degree day! We drove to Green Lake around lunchtime, picked up Daniel and Cahaya and their dogs, and went to Kitanda for lunch, then walked around Green Lake, catching shiny Litten for Pokemon Community Day while letting the dogs get some much needed exercise. <div><br /></div><div>Then we went back to Daniel's house with boba and hung out watching some Pokemon TV episodes for an hour or so before driving to Edmonds to meet Cahaya's parents at Demetris Woodstone Taverna for dinner for Bill's birthday. We parked by the waterfront and got to watch the sunset from the restaurant porch.<div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53592760744/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-03-16 14.54.45"><img alt="2024-03-16 14.54.45" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53592760744_bae24924e1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

Now we're catching up on <i>The Masked Singer</i>, whose season premiere I somehow overlooked. Katniss seems better -- she's eating, she's not throwing up, and her energy levels seem okay, though she's not stuffing her face as fast as usual, and Effie, who is usually the bullied when it comes to food, is hissing at her to try to steal bites. I did a bunch of closet organizing -- now that we've been here nearly a year, I have a much better sense of which layers get worn a lot and which are pretty useless. </div><div><br /></div><div>The weather was gorgeous, nearly 60 degrees and sunny, and the eagles were both out when we walked to the park. The good news is that they didn't find anything wrong with her apart from a bit of dehydration from vomiting, for which they gave her IV fluids and anti-nausea medication, and she has been better since we got home though still not eating a lot. The bad news is that they aren't sure what caused this, so hopefully she won't need an x-ray since the other scans didn't indicate a blockage. </div><div><br /></div><div>Otherwise I had a quiet day with the cats. I talked to my high school friends before the vet and watched a few episodes of <i>What If...?</i> with Kristen in the afternoon (obviously she needed to see Star-Lord T'Challa and Party Thor/Jotun Loki). Then we walked to the park -- today the eagles were by the nest -- and watched the Terps beat Rutgers in the first round of the Big 10 basketball tournament before dinner. Now we're watching <i>Resident Alien</i>'s second season. We had nice weather in the afternoon when we walked to the park -- one of the eagles was there today -- and my <i>Voyager</i> group met to chat and remember Patti, though we didn't watch an episode. We watched one of the Orioles spring training games against the Blue Jays -- the other was radio only, though ESPN and Kate kept me caught up -- while we folded laundry and vacuumed. Weirdly, I also got a USPS package delivered, even though it was Sunday. Then we ate lunch and drove to Marymoor Park, but it was raining so hard that we decided not to pay to park and instead headed to Idylwood Park, where the rain lessened somewhat and the large numbers of mallards and coots did not appear to mind, anyway. Here are some of the former showing off their feathers:<div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53580512199/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-03-10 15.08.14"><img alt="2024-03-10 15.08.14" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53580512199_f21752c4df.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

At least Da'Vine Joy Randolph won. Otherwise, my favorite moment besides Just Ken was DeVito and Schwarzenegger threatening Michael Keaton!</div></div>littlereviewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12768069499769338285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3762173.post-21986831601212795762024-03-10T01:43:00.004-05:002024-03-10T03:10:32.036-04:00Greetings from Everett I had plans on Saturday with my friend Chris in Snohomish, but she had a family emergency come up, so instead we watched most of the Orioles spring training game, had lunch at home, and drove to Everett. It drizzled on the way up but was sunny when we arrived, so we went first to the Evergreen Arboretum, which had a yarn-bombing display called Color Storm on and around many of the trees -- plus lots of daffodils and hellebores. Then we went to Wiggums Hollow Park, which has another local Chartres labyrinth, though it started to rain while I was walking the paths, so we didn't explore the skate park or playground. <div><br /></div><div>We drove to the nearby Funko HQ, where the Star Wars and Marvel displays are still under reconstruction but lots of awesome fannish Pops and Loungefly items were on sale (I was good, I just bought a tiny Loki coin purse to go with my Alligator Loki earrings), and we walked in town for a bit when the rain slowed because we could see the tops of the Cascades. The rain had stopped by the time we reached Redmond and there was a huge rainbow over the lake, though our dock is closed for repairs so we couldn't walk out on it. It's still mostly daffodils, flowering plum trees, and crocuses, but it was a gorgeous day to be walking in the woods and over the ravine bridge, with very few people around. Since we were nearby, we went to Crossroads Public Market for dinner and got pho and boba.<div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53576599160/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-03-08 16.44.32"><img alt="2024-03-08 16.44.32" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53576599160_0c82b574eb.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

It wasn't precisely a surprise, since she had been fighting cancer for four years, but she had been very reticent to talk about her treatment and we had no idea how ill she had become. She leaves behind a husband, a daughter, and so many friends and people she helped in fandom, and I feel as angry as sad that she won't be here for all of them and all of us. </div><div><br /></div><div>It was otherwise a quiet day with beautiful weather. I got some work done and when <lj user="apaulled"> was done working, we walked to Idylwood. The eagles seem to be nesting -- one is usually in the tree and I think one is down in the nest. I chatted with my usual Thursday night friends, then we ate dinner, and now we're watching <i>Poor Things</i>, which veers between being a feminist fantasy and the worst sort of exploitation film and I can't decide which is winning but it's definitely thought-provoking and both Dafoe and Stone are fearless. Then I had what I thought was going to be a routine ophthalmologist appointment, but apparently the narrow angles in my left eye are closing off drainage and I need laser surgery so I don't get glaucoma, so that will be in my next couple of weeks (this has nothing to do with being prediabetic, I'm told; it's a combination of genetics and age). </div><div><br /></div><div>We took a walk to the park after the eye doctor in what started as partly sunny weather, then it started hailing, then sleeting, and finally snowing before we actually got to the beach! Of course it had mostly stopped just as we got home, but we were drenched. The cats were very happy when I turned on a heated blanket and I had Effie all over me until dinner, then all over me again while watching several episodes of <i>Avatar: The Last Airbender</i> until I had to stand up because my butt was asleep. Usually she prefers to sit on men! We had a quiet morning watching the Orioles preseason game, ate an early lunch, and went to Golden Gardens Park, which has a long beach on the Sound and wetlands with a beaver dam and many ducks. We saw a few small crabs and anemones, plus a few parasails and boats, but it was too chilly for many people in the tidepools. <div><br /></div><div>Since we were nearby, we went to the Hiram Chittenden Locks in Ballard, where the main lock was closed for maintenance so there weren't any boats, but there were dozens of herons in the nests above the fish ladder and a couple of seals in the water, plus lots of daffodils in the garden. Since we were in Ballard, we stopped at Scandinavian Specialties for cheese and lingonberries on the way home.<div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53566834529/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-03-03 13.50.45"><img alt="2024-03-03 13.50.45" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53566834529_3c1470deca.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

The movie makes Napoleon out to be a loutish idiot yet ignores some of the worst things that happened under his command. At least Phoenix and Kirby have good chemistry!

We also walked to the Lake View Cemetery next door to pay our respects to Bruce and Brandon Lee and up the water tower to see the views, and we stopped at St. Mark's Cathedral so I could walk the labyrinth there. <div><br /></div><div>On the way home, we went to Safeway and got what's probably the only three minutes of snow we'll have had this winter, then drove home under a rainbow as the sun came out. We watched <i>Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom</i> on Max -- I have unashamed love for that movie, from "Look, Loki, you already lived up to your end of the deal so you can go back to Azkaban" to "No one hits my brother but me" to the Kevin Costner arrow shot to "I Am Iron Man" ending -- and now we're trying Netflix's live action <i>Avatar: The Last Airbender</i>, which I'm really enjoying a lot. <div><br /></div><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53564579973/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-03-02 13.06.31"><img alt="2024-03-02 13.06.31" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53564579973_6c21512367.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

There were lots of damp waterfowl and an eagle but almost no people. </div><div><br /></div><div>We caught up on the <i>Ghosts</i> episode we missed and now we're watching more of the third season of <i>All Creatures Great and Small</i> (not enjoying the animal suffering in war flashbacks and people with suffering dogs). Then we walked back through town, where there were lots of daffodils blooming despite the weather, and ate three kinds of tofu for dinner at Thai Cottage before going to the Edmonds Center for the Arts to see Alan Doyle, whom we haven't seen live since 2018 but he hasn't lost a step or a note! </div><div><br /></div><div>Canadian singer-songwriter (not to be confused with the actor) Adam Baldwin opened, accompanying himself on the piano, then Alan came out with his band and played lots of old favorites including Captain Kidd, When I'm Up, Consequence Free, Lukey, The Night Pat Murphy Died, 1-2-3-4, Come Out With Me, The Old Black Rum, Dancing Like We Did Last Night, How Did We Get From Saying I Love You, I Am a Sailor, It's the End of the World As We Know It, Welcome Home, and Ordinary Day. The rest of us slept late, then did a bunch of chores while watching the Orioles' first spring training game, which it turned out we could get on the MLB Channel though Kate caught me up on it before we realized we could tune in. Our neighbors pointed out that there were raccoons sleeping in the trees, the younger of which woke up and did a lot of climbing and wrestling, which annoyed the otters, who came out of the water to chase them back up trees! <div><br /></div><div>After lunch, we went to Bellevue to enjoy the weather, and to see the animals at Kelsey Creek Farm and the flowers at Bellevue Botanical Gardens. There are lots of daffodils, many blooming trees, and buds on dozens of bushes, plus some singing frogs hiding in the grass. We stopped at Safeway on the way home and ate dinner watching the SAG Awards, which I mostly enjoyed (RDJ, Lily, Barbra, Ali, Da'Vine), and now we're watching Hallmark's <i>Sense and Sensibility</i>, which is really delightful; I love the actresses and the story feels weightier with race factored in to the class issues.<div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53550548144/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-02-24 14.52.30"><img alt="2024-02-24 14.52.30" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53550548144_18f50f1c7a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>

Given the season, we were expecting to see only gray whales, but we got to see two orca pods not very far out from Edmonds -- one hunting a seal, the other taking care of a baby whale. We ate lots of snacks and saw lots of seabirds, and when we got back to the marina, we walked back to the beach and saw some seals who were nice and safe from whales. <div><br /></div><div>We stopped at Scandinavian Specialties so Haley could see it and we could get some Swedish cheese, then we walked Pepper around Fremont and went to see the troll. Then we met Daniel at Cafe Turko, where we shared four kinds of hummus, two kinds of pide, felafel, eggplant, and two spicy dishes, plus fabulous drinks. When Daniel headed home, we walked back to Adam's apartment, and we ate some Scandinavian candy before heading home ourselves. I have lots of whale photos to sort but here are a few pictures of our lovely day:<div><br /><div><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/littlereview/53548805639/in/dateposted-family/" title="2024-02-23 10.54.55"><img alt="2024-02-23 10.54.55" height="375" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53548805639_429185dd2b.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>
