Poem for Ostara and Green Spring Gardens

A Little Madness in the Spring
By Emily Dickinson

A little madness in the Spring
Is wholesome even for the King,
But God be with the Clown,
Who ponders this tremendous scene—
This whole experiment of green,
As if it were his own!

Sunday was supposed to be chillier than Saturday, but it must have been nearly 60 degrees with mostly clear skies. Daniel had robotics -- the last weekend of work before the first big competition of the year, in DC this week -- and Adam volunteered at Hebrew school in the morning in preparation for their Purim carnival. His friend Daniel came over at lunchtime, and after we ate, we took Adam and the friend to Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria so they could take photos of flowers. The park has a greenhouse, a pond with geese and turtles, a tea shop in the historic house on the property, and flower and herb gardens which are starting to come into bloom, so it was the perfect place to spend Purim/Nowruz/Ostara.

We got home later than we expected, without stopping at the grocery store after picking up Daniel. Paul couldn't decide which kind of Persian food to make for Nowruz, so ended up putting that off and made spinach quiche for dinner. I forced him to sit through the Geoffrey Rush love-fest from the Santa Barbara Film Festival, which Muic found uncut on YouTube and I managed to convert and burn to disc, and after listening to Colin Firth go on about having to watch Quills to console himself when Geoffrey wasn't around, we ended up watching that, since both boys were upstairs working on homework and unlikely to walk in on the Marquis de Sade.

Happy Equinox, wherever in the world you might be and however you might celebrate!
