The Flower
By Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Once in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower,
The people said, a weed.
To and fro they went
Thro’ my garden-bower,
And muttering discontent
Curs’d me and my flower.
Then it grew so tall
It wore a crown of light,
But thieves from o’er the wall
Stole the seed by night.
Sow’d it far and wide
By every town and tower,
Till all the people cried,
‘Splendid is the flower.’
Read my little fable:
He that runs may read.
Most can raise the flowers now,
For all have got the seed.
And some are pretty enough,
And some are poor indeed;
And now again the people
Call it but a weed.

I had a busier Thursday than usual because we moved my usual Zoom chat with my high school friends so the one who has now gone back to working part time on Fridays could come, but it was lovely getting to see all of them -- they had all their kids home when the shutdown started, and now they're all going back to college/grad school. We were also supposed to have a big family Zoom in the afternoon, but my uncle had a flat tire and couldn't get there, so that has been postponed till next week.
We took a walk in the afternoon when the morning rain had mostly dried and saw lots of mushrooms that have apparently come up from all the wet weather. Then we watched some of the Nationals loss and the delayed Orioles win around dinner before This Beautiful Fantastic, which is sweet, well-acted, and gorgeous to look at, though it's a bit cutesy when addressing big issues like whether people are mentally ill or merely eccentric. Here are some more summer flowers from Brookside Gardens last week:
