Poem for Tuesday and Indiana Jones at NatGeo

The Heart's Archaeology
By Maudelle Driskell

On some fundless expedition,
you discover it beneath
a pyracantha bush
carved from the hip bone
of a long-extinct herbivore
that walked the plains on legs
a story tall. An ocarina of bone
drilled and shaped laboriously
with tools too soft to be efficient
by one primitive musician
spending night after night
squatting by the fire.
No instrument of percussion:
place this against your lips,
fill it from your lungs to sound
a note winding double helix, solo
and thready calling to the pack.

--------

I spent a second day of fannish squee with Cheryl, who stayed over Sunday night so that on Monday we could go see Avengers: Age of Ultron with Daniel, though first we had breakfast while watching Iron Man 3 so that we could see Tony recovering from the first Avengers and the awesome post-credits bit. We all went out to lunch at the mall before the movie (Cheryl and I had samosa chaat), and, since we did not have snacks during the movie, went to Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream afterwards.

Then we came home and, because we were in the mood for some reason, watched Captain America: The First Avenger. (I know we failed to watch at least three Avengers movies plus any Hulks -- we will do better next time.) After Cheryl had to go home to her cat, my family had dinner, then those of us without summer math homework watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -- again, in the mood for some reason. Here are my most squeeful photos from the Indiana Jones exhibit at the National Geographic Museum (serious archaeology to come)!

With the idol from the temple at the start of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Harrison Ford's original costume.

With the Ark of the Covenant.

One of Kate Capshaw's costumes from The Temple of Doom.

With The Last Crusade's Holy Grail (and the false grail)!

The Crusader knight's shield that served as a marker to find the Grail, as well as a clip from the movie showing Indy finding it.

With one of the Crystal Skull aliens.

With the Indiana Jones model in the gift shop!
