Poem for Wednesday, Local Geese, Houdini & Doyle

Bread and Cake
By Kevin Prufer

The black Mercedes
with the Ayn Rand
vanity plate
crashed through
the glass bus stop
and came to rest
among a bakery’s
upturned tables.
In the stunned silence,
fat pigeons descended
to the wreckage
and pecked at
the scattered
bread and cake.
The driver slept,
head to the wheel.
The pigeons grew
rich with crumbs.
The broken glass winked.
God grinned.

In the middle of Tuesday morning, we took Adam to the airport for his flight to Austin, from which he was taken to Texas State in San Marcos. His flight took off late, but he apparently had a pizza dinner when he got there and walked around the campus so thus far things seem fine! The rest of our day was pretty dull until late afternoon when Paul and I went to take a walk by the pond in the neighborhood next to ours because we had spotted goslings while driving by and wanted to see them before they were adults:

I had to go to CVS before three coupons expired at the end of May, and since it was a day ending in 31, I also stopped at Baskin Robbins, which had $1.31 scoops. After dinner, while our cats ignored us (three were in different bedrooms and the fourth refused to acknowledge us), we watched a couple of episodes of Houdini and Doyle since we'd gotten behind. I really enjoy most aspects of the show, though the man-pain predicated on an unconscious woman is already getting annoying and they either need to wake her permanently or drop it!
