Poem for Saturday and Homestead Goats

A Goat in a Landfill
By Kenn Nesbitt

A goat was in a landfill
eating garbage and debris
and came across a movie;
a discarded DVD.

He chewed the case and cover
and the flavor made him smile.
He took the disc between his lips
and nibbled for a while.

He thought, “This film is brilliant;
full of action and suspense.
The story is exciting
and the fight scenes are intense.

“It’s got a lot of comedy,
a touch of sweet romance,
and music so inspiring
it makes me want to dance.”

He gnawed a little longer
through some drama and a chase,
and finished off the movie
with a grin upon his face.

He gulped the closing credits —
one more bite was all it took —
and thought, “That film was awesome
but I still preferred the book.”

--------

Friday started hot and humid and is ending with enough rain to have triggered a flood warning that just made our phones scream at us. We watched The Boys season finale at lunchtime so no one could spoil us -- it was hard to stay off Twitter given the situations in Japan and the UK both, but between that show and Thor: Love and Thunder, there were a lot of spoilers to dodge -- and in the afternoon we took a walk at Locust Grove and stopped in Giant on the way to retrieve our van, which has improved brakes now. We had dinner with my parents and saw one of the young foxes who come visit their neighbor's bird feeders (to steal seed, we hope, and not catch birds).

Then we came home and wound up watching Dear Evan Hanson, from which I knew most songs but I've never seen the play so comparisons had no bearing on how I watched the movie. It feels really dated in its approach to talking about mental health and teen suicide, and I find Evan a hard character to want to like although I understand that a lot of his issues are out of his control because he's not being honest with anyone from his therapist to his mother to himself about how serious his depression is. I also found the pacing of the film glacial and the tone wildly uneven, but I think critics were unfair to Platt and Adams. Homestead Farm goats and goat walk:
