Poem for Monday

Summer Will Come 'Round Again
By Jennifer Cutting and Renaud Detressan

In summer, we dream of the harvest,
In winter, we dream of the spring,
In darkness, we dream of the sunlight
Painting the sheen on the dragonfly's wing.

Youthful, we dream of adventure,
Restless to start on the Quest,
Flying the heights of ambition,
Aching with pride to be seen with the best.

Wondering, we dream of the answer,
Stranded, we dream of the tide,
Breathless we wait the arrival
Of the kiss that will waken the slumbering bride.

Spin all your dreams on the Wheel of the Year;
Summer will come 'round again,
Open your eyes and it's already here,
Freeing the fire that runs in our veins.

Hungry, we dream of the farmlands,
Rich with the seed and the root;
Thirsty, we dream of the vineyard,
Sweet with the juice of the ripening fruit.

Withered, we dream of the greening,
Weary, we dream of relief;
Shivering, we dream of the sunshine,
Warming the face of each strawberry leaf.

Nodding, we dream of our young loves,
Of kisses bestowed in the rain,
How rivers once frozen were melting,
Freeing the fire that ran in our veins.

Spin all your dreams on the Wheel of the Year;
Summer will come 'round again,
Open your eyes and it's already here,
Freeing the fire that runs in our veins.

In summer, we dream of the harvest,
In winter, we dream of the spring,
In darkness, we dream of the sunlight
Painting the sheen on the dragonfly's wing,
Painting the sheen on each dragonfly's wing...

We had a lovely day at the Washington Folk Festival, where Jennifer Cutting had the Greenwoman pass out the lyrics above so that the audience could sing along with Ocean Orchestra. She also included lyrics to another new song, "Greenman," and to a "Sun Shanty" to the tune of "General Taylor" ("Callin' the sun and followin' the sun...follow 'im to the Harvest Home"), which was performed accompanied by the Foggy Bottom Morris Men -- great fun! We also saw Finnegan's Jig, which is the name Jody Marshall, Zan McLeod, Andrea Hoag, and Carey Creed have chosen for their ensemble -- we saw them last summer under a different name, and listened to several pipers, fiddlers and other performers in between looking at the craft show and eating lunch.

The Greenman, a.k.a. Steve Winick, performing "Greenman" with Ocean Orchestra at the folk festival.

Here is Ocean Orchestra's Lisa Moscatiello on guitar...

...with Jennifer Cutting, Cheryl Hurwitz, and Zan McLeod on accordion, fiddle, and one of the many banjos, guitars, mandolins, fiddles, bouzoukis and other stringed instruments McLeod plays.

Along with Lisa Moscatiello, Grace Griffith sings vocals for Ocean Orchestra.

Unfortunately all my photos of the Morris dancing are terrible, since I took them with my phone while I was recording video on my camera (we forgot to charge the camcorder so I was stuck using my Nikon to tape the new songs when Jennifer asked me if I could). However, you can see a bit of video on Facebook.

However, I did get a photo with the Greenman himself after the set.

Here is Jody Marshall playing the hammered dulcimer with Finnegan's Jig.

And this is Carey Creed, who plays guitar and sings.

I have sad news about the photos I posted yesterday...Adam walked to the pool with his friend when we got home from the folk festival and saw that the chipmunk had been hit by a car in front of our house. We are very unhappy about this. (I don't think I need to tell people how sad and furious I am about the assassination of Dr. George Tiller.) In the evening, Daniel went to the robotics team's end-of-year party, held in a park near his school, where they apparently ate lots of junk, named the winners of the elections for next year's offices (we couldn't persuade him to run), and played some kind of frisbee capture-the-flag game that sounds a bit like what they had to design their robots to do during the build season.

Happy June!
