My uncle's neighborhood outside Santa Clarita has been evacuated -- the fire is on the other side of the mountain, the smoke is pouring over and the fire department banged on the door and ordered everyone out. My uncle and his wife and son are at a hotel; my parents stayed with friends elsewhere in the Los Angeles suburbs last night, and are driving to San Diego today, a day early for the conference. Apparently the freeway they need to take is open but they have no idea what's going to happen in San Diego in terms of the air quality or whether the conference will go as planned.
Scary. This is the second time this has happened to my uncle; I can't even imagine what it's like to live there.
