Poem for Friday, Butler's Orchard, Sharknado

Aboard at a Ship’s Helm
By Walt Whitman

Aboard, at a ship’s helm,
A young steersman, steering with care.

A bell through fog on a sea-coast dolefully ringing,
An ocean-bell—O a warning bell, rock’d by the waves.

O you give good notice indeed, you bell by the sea-reefs ringing,
Ringing, ringing, to warn the ship from its wreck-place.

For, as on the alert, O steersman, you mind the bell’s admonition,
The bows turn,—the freighted ship, tacking, speeds away under her gray sails,
The beautiful and noble ship, with all her precious wealth, speeds away gaily and safe.

But O the ship, the immortal ship! O ship aboard the ship!
O ship of the body—ship of the soul—voyaging, voyaging, voyaging.

Our power is blipping in the thunderstorms we are currently having so I shall be brief. Did work in the morning, then took the kids to Lebanese Taverna for lunch, stopped to get Heather a birthday present, then went to Bagel City to get bagels for next week. Dropped Daniel off at home and fed the cats, made Adam a doctor's appointment for cross country. Went driving through Potomac with Adam, tried to visit Garuda Aviary at the Kunzang Palyul Chöling temple but it was closed, said hello to their cats instead. It was a six-bunny day in the neighborhood even though I walked early for fear of the rain which only just arrived.

In the evening we watched the most amazing movie ever made: Sharknado. Words cannot do justice to the extremely dramatic acting, the stunningly clever dialogue which made clear precisely what proper family roles should be, the cinematography which allowed it to be a perfectly sunny day with huge tornadoes, the love of nature like blowing up a swimming pool full of sharks, and above all the brilliant science which attributes massive tornadoes full of sharks that can breathe out of water to global warming. Plus it has a Biblical allegory at the end. The next time you need to laugh until your stomach hurts, I highly recommend it. Butler's Orchard last weekend:
