Poem for Monday and Puppies of Penzance

Watching a Weiqi Game
By Su Shi
Translated by Zu-yan Chen

In front of Five-Old-Men Peak, Was a place left by the White Crane. Tall pines shaded the courtyard; The breeze and sunshine were pure and lovely. I was visiting alone, And hadn't met a single gentleman. Who was it playing wei-ch'i? Outside the door, two pairs of shoes. No human voice was heard, But occasionally I heard stones being put down. Sitting across from each other over the lined board Who understands the flavor of the scene? Fishing with an unbaited book Are the wishes for bream and carp? My little son is close to the Way, He puts down stones casually. Victory is surely pleasant, But defeat can also be enjoyed. Leisurely and unhurriedly This is the way for the moment.

Most of my Monday was quiet -- I had a lot of laundry from last week and the weekend, including a bunch of festival stuff that can't go in the washer/dryer -- and I had a lot of photos to get sorted and uploaded. We took a walk early and ate our leftover Cava for dinner so we could go to our neighborhood clubhouse, where a mahjong group is being revived. I can tell that it's going to take me a long time to learn to play, but I won one round!

We came home for the Rays win over the Guardians, a series I've always been ambivalent about; I'm very happy the Rays knocked the Yankees out and they have several former Orioles I like (plus the ray tank), but we saw most of this Guardians team in Cleveland last year and it would be nice if that city had a championship it could brag about under the team's current name. Here are the Puppies of Penzance at King Richard's Faire, plus petting zoo goats:
