Greetings from Home

Whole day of unpacking, laundry, getting the key back from the cat-sitter, and other post-trip chores after jet-lag oversleeping and convincing the cats we did not abandon them, of which only treats seem to convince them.

We managed a quick walk before dinner, then my DS9 group watched "The Way of the Warrior" -- the double-episode season four premiere with Worf and many Klingons (these days I can laugh about the Kira-Dax holodeck storyline but I hated it originally).

We caught up on last Friday's excellent Dark Matter and now we're watching last Thursday's Strange New Worlds -- I like the Kirk family history but Pike kind of feels like a guest star on his own show. Pics from yesterday in Washington:

Greetings from Seattle

Quick post after long travel day! We got up at 6 a.m. to drive from Worcester to the airport in Boston, where we had an uneventful flight (I was dozing and reading Hild around snacks and lunch), then a ridiculously long wait to pick up a rental car, which we drove to a hotel in downtown Seattle where Daniel met us on his way home from work.

After helping me fight with the hotel wifi, he went with us to his new house, where we played with the dogs and hung out with Cahaya who's on call for work this weekend, then we went to dinner at Naam Thai and walked a bit in the nearby Madrona neighborhood. Now we're back at the hotel and I'm very sleepy even though it's not even 10 p.m. here! More tomorrow!

Greetings from Massachusetts

Quickie, Cheryl is here and we're watching Strange New Worlds after a crazy day during which she endured many, many hours of flight delays and rerouting (we were supposed to pick her up in Worcester, we picked her up in Boston). I have a family member out of state in the hospital, so that's upsetting, and I talked to several relatives in the morning before cleaning the bathrooms and doing laundry in preparation for guests. We picked up Thai food and ate it with Adam and Haley before heading to the airport. More tomorrow!

Greetings from Boston

Quick post after a full day of traveling, which was very stressful for Katniss and Effie and therefore stressful for me, starting with a 4:15 a.m. wakeup to get out of the hotel by 5 and to the airport so the cats could be taken out of their carriers in a security room. They were then stuck in their carriers for several hours, and while we expected Katniss (who boycotted her breakfast and thus did not get her Gabapentin) to complain, Effie meowed in aggravation for a full hour of the flight.

We arrived in Boston half an hour early, picked up a rental car, and nearly had a crisis when the suitcase with Effie's carrier sitting on top of it fell over; fortunately she seems fine (at least, she's eating everything in sight and not being nearly as nervous a cat as last night). After driving to Worcester, we had The Halal Guys deliver hummus and falafel for dinner and had cats whining for extra treats. Now we're catching up on Olympics pairs skating and women's ski jumping and slalom.

Greetings from Maryland

Woke up before 5 a.m. on Friday to fly to DC, easily the quickest flight we've ever had from Seattle -- the same storm that brought all the flooding to the PNW pushed us across the country in a bit over four hours. We grabbed breakfast in the airport, nibbled it on the plane, and didn't even have time for lunch. It took more than an hour to drive from Dulles to my parents, where we ate the sandwiches we'd brought on the plane for dinner.

We're staying at the same hotel we were at a couple of weeks ago, where Adam, Haley, and Pepper met us for a few minutes after they checked in a couple of hours after we did. Daniel and Cahaya are on a delayed flight so we probably won't see them until tomorrow. We saw a bit of a bad Hallmark Channel Christmas show, then a bit of the Hollywood Christmas Parade, and we're about to get some sleep! Volcanoes from the air and Pepper:

Poem for Monday and Smoky Seafair

Old Man Eating Alone in a Chinese Restaurant
By Billy Collins

I am glad I resisted the temptation,
if it was a temptation when I was young,
to write a poem about an old man
eating alone at a corner table in a Chinese restaurant.

I would have gotten it all wrong
thinking: the poor bastard, not a friend in the world
and with only a book for a companion.
He'll probably pay the bill out of a change purse.

So glad I waited all these decades
to record how hot and sour the hot and sour
soup is here at Chang's this afternoon
and how cold the Chinese beer in a frosted glass.

And my book — José Saramago's Blindness
as it turns out — is so absorbing that I look up
from its escalating horrors only
when I am stunned by one of his gleaming sentences.

And I should mention the light
that falls through the big windows this time of day
italicizing everything it touches —
the plates and teapots, the immaculate tablecloths,

as well as the soft brown hair of the waitress
in the white blouse and short black skirt,
the one who is smiling now as she bears a cup of rice
and shredded beef with garlic to my favorite table in the corner.

Haze from the Bear Gulch fire in the Olympic Peninsula and from the Cameron Lake fire in British Columbia made Monday a cool, cloudy day with air that smelled like smoke. It made me low-energy; I got some laundry done and finished reading The Once and Future Witches (which didn't quite stick the landing, though I still liked it) but the walk to the beach made my eyes itchy and my throat a little scratchy.

We saw the Orioles lose horribly to the Phillies, had gnocchi with veggie bacon for dinner, then we watched The Bad Guys, which is cute and distracting from the state of the world, and then because of the book I finished and because I needed more distraction I wanted to watch Wicked again. Here's what the wildfire smoke looked like yesterday when the Blue Angels were performing for Seafair over Lake Washington:

Greetings from Kirkland

We had a quiet Sunday morning watching baseball and reading, then we had acai bowls for lunch and headed to Kirkland. The Lammas-Lughnasadh PNW Witches' Market was taking place there, and we knew that odds were good that we'd be able to see the Blue Angels flying over Seattle across Lake Washington in the afternoon. So we shopped a bit and listened to music in the market, then got caramel popcorn and fresh lemonade from one of the vendors and hung out by the lake until the planes appeared. It was cooler than predicted because of wildfire haze.

We stopped at Safeway on the way home for supplies for the week, watched the end of the day's baseball as the Phillies beat the Tigers -- the Orioles had lost in a ninth inning heartbreaker but the Mariners won -- then we ate dinner and watched The Gilded Age (that's one way to shut up George Russell but oh Peggy why didn't you tell him) and now we're watching How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, the Bee Gees documentary that also explores the racism and homophobia in the anti-disco movement that sidelined their careers in the late '70s.

Lyrics for Thursday, Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge

Kid Fears
By Amy Ray

Pain from pearls, hey little girl
How much have you grown?
Pain from pearls, hey little girl
Flowers for the ones you've known

Are you on fire from the years?
What would you give for your kid fears?

Secret staircase, running high
You had a hiding place
Secret staircase, running low
They all know, now you're inside

Are you on fire from the years?
What would you give for your kid fears?

Skipping stones, we know the price now
Any sin will do
How much further, if you can spin
How much further, if you are smooth

Are you on fire from the years?
What would you give for your kid fears?

Replace the rent with the stars above
Replace the need with love
Replace the anger with the tide
Replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love

Are you on fire from the years?
What would you give for your kid fears?
Are you on fire from the years?
What would you give for your kid fears?

--------

Much of my Thursday was about unexciting things like folding the finally-dry-on-the-rack Renfaire laundry and sorting and uploading photos from the Yes We Are tour last night. I also did some reading, ate some acai, and went on the porch twice because we could hear the Blue Angels practicing for Seafair nearby, but we couldn't spot them. In the afternoon we walked to the beach, where there were lazy ducks and a couple of eagles complaining at each other in the trees. I tried to keep up with all the baseball trades happening before the deadline this afternoon, which included some of my favorite Orioles; at least the Mariners got Suarez and clobbered the Rangers.

My Thursday night chat group discussed our week in entertainment, after which Cheryl and I watched the first two episodes of the current season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, after which Paul and I watched the newest episode (it's not my favorite holodeck story, but I would give Paul Wesley an Emmy for playing Kirk as Jim Carrey from In Living Color)! Now we're watching the bonus episode of The Sandman, whose cast is a delight (Colin Morgan!) and thus far is a strangely hopeful take on death. Meanwhile, I wanted to save some more photos from the concert last night -- Melissa Etheridge, the Indigo Girls, and Lucy Wainwright Roche:
