Poem for Thursday and Richmond Arts

Smell
By William Carlos Williams

Oh strong-ridged and deeply hollowed
nose of mine! what will you not be smelling?
What tactless asses we are, you and I, boney nose,
always indiscriminate, always unashamed,
and now it is the souring flowers of the bedraggled
poplars: a festering pulp on the wet earth
beneath them. With what deep thirst
we quicken our desires
to that rank odor of a passing springtime!
Can you not be decent? Can you not reserve
   your ardors
for something less unlovely? What girl will care
for us, do you think, if we continue in these ways?
Must you taste everything? Must you know everything?
Must you have a part in everything?

--------

I have spent a wonderful Wednesday in Richmond with Paul and Delta from which I did not return home till after 10 p.m. (ha, we survived 12:12:12 on 12/12/12)! We met up at the VMFA, which has an exhibit of Dale Chihuly glass -- the largest-ever platform installation ever assembled by Chihuly, a huge collection of baskets accompanied by Chihuly's personal collection of Native American blankets, a neon starburst -- and had lunch in the cafe there, including chocolate mousse.

From there we went to Maymont Park, which includes a gorgeously restored Victorian mansion full of antiques and currently decorated for Christmas, a local wildlife zoo and farm, and a nature center. And then we went to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's winter light festival, where we had dinner in the Robins Tea House, where we had zucchini cakes and pumpkin curry while overlooking the decorated trees and walked through the conservatory and gardens all lit for the holidays. Here are a few photos:

Me and hubby at the Chihuly exhibit's Laguna Torcello...

...and Delta in front of Chihuly's Macchia.

In the Japanese gardens at Maymont...

...and greeting a crab in the nature center, which focuses on the James River.

In the conservatory by the huge tree at Lewis Ginter Botanic Garden...

...and about to be swallowed by a giant dragon.
