Poem for Tuesday and Garden Flowers

The Russian Spoon
By Anne Myles

I think of the Russian serving spoon
that lay in my mother’s drawer, then mine
in one city and another: aged metal,

gray-toned, pointy-headed like a bird
with a thin graceful neck and widening tail.
The silver spoon nests in its darkness,

in the story I’ve lost, who it came from—
the wealthy grandmother or the poor one
who nonetheless recited Russian poetry;

which bag or chest it was once thrown in,
or carefully bundled, with what hope or fear.
It flew to America, shining relic, outlasting

the Cossack swords, the bits and spurs
that jingled terribly on the galloping horses.
How many peaceful dinners has it seen,

grasped by my mother’s hands, now mine,
as TV clatters the news of our time?
The spoon keeps itself, innocent and mute,

even when the old poetic dreams are gone—
now when I no longer picture just a bird
but a missile, and think of all we can’t outrun.

Winter returned on Tuesday -- we woke up to snow. It didn't stick, since the temperature hovered above freezing, but the wind chill was in the 20s and it was very cold when we took a walk, though a couple of bunnies were out anyway. At least the neighborhood daffodils haven't opened yet, despite how many we saw at Tower Hill Botanic Garden over the weekend:

I did a bunch of computer stuff while watching the Orioles comeback win, and watched DS9's "Equilibrium" with those of my group who could make it after dinner. Then we caught up on Monday's Watson (finally it has momentum now that it's been canceled) and now we're watching this week's Daredevil and I wish the things I love outweighed the things I don't.

Greetings from Purgatory Chasm

We had rain forecast on Tuesday, but it only rained for a few minutes and it was 70 degrees. Unfortunately our neighborhood management sent us a note saying that bird feeders are only permitted for hummingbirds from April through October, so I took down the feeder I just put up yesterday and hung the liquid feeders instead. Some of the loose seed fell out, so we were visited by chipmunks to gather them, which makes me happy.

I had a computer project to do which took up most of the afternoon, then Paul came home and we took a walk to see the bunnies and hear the frogs before dinner. Two people couldn't come to my DS9 group, so the rest of us chatted, then I watched the two new Daredevil episodes with Cheryl. Here are some photos from Purgatory Chasm, along with the warning signs about ice on the rocks and the dangers of sliding on Slant Rock:

Poem for Monday and Celtic Celebration

St. Patrick's Day
By Jean Blewett

There’s an Isle, a green Isle, set in the sea,
Here’s to the Saint that blessed it!
And here’s to the billows wild and free
That for centuries have caressed it!

Here’s to the day when the men that roam
Send longing eyes o’er the water!
Here’s to the land that still spells home
To each loyal son and daughter!

Here’s to old Ireland—fair, I ween,
With the blue skies stretched above her!
Here’s to her shamrock warm and green,
And here’s to the hearts that love her!

--------

I unpacked four boxes of science fiction books on Monday -- two with anthologies of year's best and award winners, one entirely my remaining Star Trek books, one graphic novels and comics collections -- plus what I think is the remaining box of children's books we saved, though we're not entirely sure what's in all the boxes the mitigation company packed after the flood (some very random combinations, some books badly smashed between others). It's weird having bookcases with gaps for books we're not even sure if we still own.

We had snow flurries on and off all day, but nothing stuck to the roads, and it didn't stop us from taking a walk, nor did it stop the bunny from coming out to eat the neighbor's grass. We watched the new episode of Paradise -- so many amoral people! -- followed by last night's Watson -- can teenagers actually sue doctors for NOT having advised their parents to abort them? -- and now we're watching more Artful Dodger. At Old Sturbridge Village's Celtic Celebration, we saw music, needlework, smithing, cattle, and food:

Greetings from the Driveway

Thursday was another cold day and I spent a lot of it in the unheated garage, moving boxes to see if I could figure out what's in the ones that are left. I only unpacked four boxes, but they all had things I didn't know we hadn't given away before the flood so there were some treasures, though there were also a few books the mitigation company packed so badly that they were horribly damaged.

I put together a storage bench for the front hall, reorganized games in the second bedroom, took a walk, saw some of the first round of the NCAA tournament, and chatted with my Thursday night group before we all headed off to watch The Pitt (stressful and ended on an upsetting note). Here are some pictures of the bunny (or possibly bunnies) that live on our cul-de-sac and seem unfazed by snow:

Greetings from Green Hill Park

I did almost no unpacking on Saturday! I did a bit of arranging stuff in the morning, then we ate lunch and went to Green Hill Park, which has a farm, the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and several ponds, sports fields, playground areas, and wooded hiking trails. Unfortunately the animals were being brought inside when we arrived in low wind chill, so we just got a glimpse of the sheep and donkeys, but it was Pokemon Community Day, so I was happy to walk around the memorial pond catching Scorbunnys and appreciating the views.

We also stopped at Trader Joe's, Shaw's, Starbucks, and -- since we were right nearby, how could we help it -- Gerardo's Bakery for cannoli. We did not eat those until after dinner -- shepherd's pie for Pi Day -- after which we watched Hamnet, which I wanted to see before the Academy Awards just in case it wins. It's excellent, superbly acted and beautifully filmed, though I think Sinners is the more groundbreaking film and therefore I'm rooting for it in most categories; I do love movies that explore Shakespeare's relevance.

Greetings from the Thaw

I'm not used to my new Wednesday schedule! I sorted my bookcase ornaments in the morning, then chatted with my high school friends after lunch instead of before. Then I organized the empty boxes in the garage because someone was coming to freecycle a bunch of them, sorted out the large mirror and photo boxes, hung up a few photos in the living room and hallway, and watched the start of the second season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power with Kristen and Laurie.

It wasn't as warm as it had been on Tuesday, but we walked through the neighborhood amidst melting snow. Now we can see that we have a bunny who lives or at least hangs out under our front steps! We ate leftover Indian food from the Bollywood Grill for dinner, saw The Masked Singer (finally the part of the season where it's all people who can sing), and now we're watching the back half of Bookish, which has been excellent. Greetings from Maple Days

Spent nearly the whole day working in the bedroom, trying to fit books and Tarot decks on shelves whose configurations I could not reproduce despite having taken photos and having a bigger bookcase on one wall than previously. It was a gorgeous day, at least, nearly 60 degrees, so we did take a long walk!

We talked to my parents and kids for my mother's birthday, and tonight I've been working on photos from yesterday while watching this week's Paradise (wow, what a turn) and Watson (ha, and I thought the broken penis was the worst). Maple sugaring at Sturbridge Village from tapping the trees to creating sugar molds:

Greetings from Old Sturbridge Village

Sunday was a gorgeous not-very-cold day, so my friend Meredith from my Trek group came to our house in the late morning and we took her to meet Adam and Haley at Old Sturbridge Village, which I'd visited with Haley, Hildy, and their family in 2022 shortly before we moved to the west coast. It was autumn then and full winter today -- scenic views of sheep in snow and fog from evaporation on the hills -- but it's also maple sugar season, so we got to see sap being tapped and boiled and sugar being made in molds. We visited the printer, the blacksmith, the general store, a midwife, and several other interpreters, too.

When we left in the late afternoon, we decided to go to the Bollywood Grill in Shrewsbury, which is where we ate in 2022. We shared a bunch of excellent vegetarian Indian dishes and stopped next door in Gerardo's Bakery for cannoli, whoopie pies, and other desserts to bring home to eat when we were less full. We also gave Adam and Haley back their vacuum, which had been left in our basement. We came home and got to see a spectacular pink twilight sky before we did a bit of furniture reorganizing, then we sat down to watch The Bluff, which has a good cast and is decently acted but is way too violent for me.
