By J.R.R. Tolkien
Over the land there lies a long shadow,
westward reaching wings of darkness.
The Tower trembles; to the tombs of kings
doom approaches. The Dead awaken;
for the hour is come for the oathbreakers:
at the Stone of Erech they shall stand again
and hear there a horn in the hills ringing.
Whose shall the horn be? Who shall call them
from the grey twilight, the forgotten people?
The heir of him to whom the oath they swore.
From the North shall he come, need shall drive him:
he shall pass the Door to the Paths of the Dead.

Paul only had to work half a day on Friday, so after a morning of getting things done, we visited with our neighbors for a while to give them Christmas presents and play with the cats. Then we had lunch and went to Farrel McWhirter Park, which has a little farm, a horse arena with trailer parking, and trails into the woods crossing Mackey Creek, which has rapids after all the rain we've had. We got there just as the animals were being fed, so even though it was raining, we got to stay in the barn and watch them eat. Then we walked in the woods and went to see the horses.
We stopped at Safeway on the way home and got to see a spectacular sunset from the parking lot. Then we watched the first of the new season's What If...? episodes with Cheryl before dinner. (Lots of things I liked: a Nebula story that has nothing to do with her family, Nova Prime's Die Hard moment, the big name guest voice actors, and Howard the Duck showing up again!) Now we're watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers extended edition because I think of all these films as long winter nights movies and I love Boromir and Faramir, in the extended edition.
