Poem for Sunday and Storage Unit

Storage
By Mary Oliver

When I moved from one house to another
there were many things I had no room
for. What does one do? I rented a storage
space. And filled it. Years passed.
Occasionally I went there and looked in,
but nothing happened, not a single
twinge of the heart.

As I grew older the things I cared
about grew fewer, but were more
important. So one day I undid the lock
and called the trash man. He took
everything.

I felt like the little donkey when
his burden is finally lifted. Things!
Burn them, burn them! Make a beautiful
fire! More room in your heart for love,
for the trees! For the birds who own
nothing -- the reason they can fly.

We had rain all day Sunday in Seattle, as much as Louis and Lestat are having in Paris in the current great episode of Interview with the Vampire, so we figured it was a good day to go to our storage unit to go through boxes that have been sitting in there for a year, find the books we wanted to keep and the ones we know we want to give away, and bring them to our apartment. I finally have my Shakespeare books and some film books, and we can finally get rid of our remaining VHS tapes and sports books.

Since it wasn't raining too hard when we got home, we walked on the dock and found a new family of wood ducklings, plus there's a frog and at least four very active eagles. We had more of our leftovers for dinner and watched the end of the day's baseball, then we started watching Eric, which is stressful and strange and quite well done so far; Benedict Cumberbatch is very good. We took a break for Interview with the Vampire -- probably my favorite episode so far this season, though I really feel for Claudia.
