Poem for Friday and Cabin John Sunset

Twilight
By Rae Armantrout

Where there’s smoke
there are mirrors

and a dry ice machine,
industrial quality fans.

If I’ve learned anything
about the present moment

But who doesn’t
love a flame,

the way one leaps
into being

full-fledged,
then leans over

to chat

Already the light
is retrospective,
sourceless,

is losing itself
though the trees
are clearly limned.

We spent most of Thursday indoors, partly because it was cold out and we had work to do but mostly because mitigators were here to repair the drywall that was damaged in the leak earlier in the year. It has finally been fixed and painted! In the afternoon, we took a walk at Locust Grove, where we saw the sunset, then went to Giant, from which we saw a pink twilight before we replaced all the food Adam ate while he was here!

We watched this week's Wheel of Time, which Amazon apparently releases at midnight GMT (unlike Disney+ which releases things at midnight PST, so much more annoying for people in EST). I chatted with my fan friends, and we caught the end of the Pittsburgh-Minnesota game, which was very exciting; I was rooting against the Steelers but it was hard not to be impressed at how they came back from no points at halftime to almost tying the game.
